KREFELD VOLLEYBALL TEAMS VISIT LEICESTER FOR TOURNAMENT HELD BY ATHENA VOLLEYBALL CLUB

The weekend of the 16th and 17th August saw Leicester Athena host their fifth annual volleyball tournament.  It is a chance for teams from across the country to shake off the summer and start their preparations for the new season.

On Saturday, we had the women’s tournament with eight teams from clubs as far away as Reading and Lincoln.  On Sunday, it was the chance for the men to shine with ten teams, and it showcased the global nature of volleyball.  We had teams of Nigerian players, Polish players and Zimbabwean players, as well as two teams from Leicester.  

For us, the highlight was hosting a team from Krefeld for the first time. Many years ago, teams from Krefeld and Leicester regularly travelled to play in each other’s tournaments, and we are proud that we were able to restart that tradition this year.  The Krefeld club, Verberger TV, brought a team of women and a team of men, and they played with great spirit. They loved the chance to play abroad, and it was fabulous to watch bonds form over a beer and food on the Saturday evening. 

Plans are already in place for Athena to visit Krefeld in May for a beach tournament and for Krefeld to return next August.
