Police cadets soap box Derby Krefeld 2022

Leicestershire Voluntary Police Cadets Visit Krefeld, Germany in August 2022 to take part in the Bi-Annual Soapbox Derby

On August 12th 2022, 9 Leicestershire Police Cadets and 2 leaders flew from Birmingham to Dusseldorf, where they were met by Youth Leaders from Krefeld, Germany.

The purpose of the visit was to engage with local youths and to partake in a soapbox derby which normally takes place every 2 years.  The event should have taken place last year but due to Covid it could not happen and a virtual soapbox derby took place.  On the day of arrival the cadets and their leaders, were taken for lunch in a restaurant which is based in an old restaurant.  They all had a wonderful meal and it gave the cadets their first opportunity to meet local young persons – some of whom would be the opposition.

On the Saturday, the cadets met the Oberbürgermeister, Mr. Frank Meyer. They also spent the day decorating their soapboxes; a double decker bus and a conventional soapbox cart.

Sunday was the big day, the day of the derby. The cadets raced well and finished eighth overall from an entry of approximately 20 entrants. Later on they were treated to a barbecue.

Before flying back on the Monday, the cadets and their leaders were entertained by officers from the Krefeld Police. This visit was arranged by members of the Krefeld Branch of the International Police Association.

All the cadets and their leaders said they had a wonderful time and were treated well.
