BEACON OF LIGHT FROM JUDGEMEADOW COMMUNITY COLLEGE

During these dark days of lockdown and restrictions during the dangers we have faced from the Corona Virus, we have fortunately been presented with a beacon of light from some of the pupils of Judgemeadow Community College.  Spearheaded by CLETA executive member, Rita D’Silva Griffiths, the children of key workers, nursing and other emergency personnel, have created a touching symbol of the hope and goodwill that abounds within the various twinning connections that Leicester has with the Cities of Krefeld, Strasbourg and Haskovo.

Guided by their tutors, Vicky Loxley (Head of Languages) and Zoe Eaves (Head of Design and Technology), the students have made three lanterns.  Each one is unique and different in structure, just as we are all unique and different in the cities we live in.  However saying this, they are all made from the same material of wood, which is natural and sustainable. This same material can again be found anywhere in our cities.

The lanterns and plaques were made by students determined to succeed, students who are driven by the great staff at Judgemeadow Community College and students who have completed this project in a very short space of time.  No matter where in the world we come from, peace, unity and friendship will see us through these tough times together.

Educating our children about the world, history and cultural differences is now more important than ever before.  Long may our ‘Twinning’ continue!

You will see that each lantern comes together with a candle which the students would like our individual twinned cities of Krefeld, Strasbourg and Haskovo, to light and display at an appropriate time when it can be appreciated by a watching audience.  Following the inaugural lighting, there is also a glass holder for our partners to use tea lights with them in the future.
